Marriage License
Applying for a Marriage LicenseOur office issues marriage licenses by appointment. Call 784-5240 to set up an appointment or for specific information.There is a 24-hour waiting period between the time the license is issued and when the ceremony may be performed. Licenses are valid within New York State for 60 days. |
When applying for a marriage license, you must provide:
Proof of Age and Identity
A person is required to establish proof of age and identity by submitting to the issuing clerk the original or certified copies of one of the following age related documents. If any of the documents are in a language other than English, a certified translation must be provided. Only the following documents will be accepted:
- Birth Certificate
- Baptismal record
- Naturalization record
- Census record
And one of the following identity related documents:
- Driver's license
- Passport
- Government or school issued identification card bearing a photo of the applicant
- Immigration record
Need assistance obtaining your birth certificate? For births within Monroe County, call the Office of Vital Records at (585) 753-5141. For births outside Monroe County, contact the County Clerk Office for that county.
Previous Marriages
Information regarding previous marriages must be furnished in the application for a marriage license. This includes whether the former spouse or spouses are living, and whether the applicants are divorced and, if so, when, where and against whom the divorce or divorces were granted. If any of the documents are in a language other than English, a certified translation must be provided.
- If the previous marriage ended by divorce, a copy of the Decree of Divorce or a Certificate of Dissolution of Marriage with a date stamp showing when it was filed is required prior to issuing the marriage license.
- If the previous marriage ended with the passing of the former spouse, a copy of the Death Certificate is required prior to issuing the marriage license.
- Proof of dissolution is required for ALL prior marriages
The license fee is $40 and includes the issuance of a Certificate of Marriage Registration. We accept cash, check, or VISA/MC/Discover. There is an additional fee of $20 for any returned checks.
