Very soon you will be receiving, from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, information on how to re-register for the New York State Basic STAR Exemption. If you are a homeowner who currently receives a basic STAR exemption, you must re-register in order to receive this same exemption for 2014. Because this is a NY State administered program, we are unable to accept this registration at our local Town of Brighton Assessor’s office, so you will need to follow the instructions included in the communication you will be receiving in the mail. The NY State Department of Taxation and Finance is also offering on-line registration through this website www.tax.ny.gov or you can call (518) 457-2036 and you will be able to re-register over the phone. Please note this re-registration requirement does not apply to: FIRST time Homeowner applicants for BASIC STAR exemption (Use Form RP-425 available on the Tax Department’s website or here in the Assessor’s office at the Brighton Town Hall). SENIOR CITIZENS receiving the ENHANCED STAR exemption are not affected by this new registration requirement. However, Seniors must continue to apply for the Enhanced Star Exemption annually or participate in the Income Verification Program.
